As the cornerstone of our programs, the hard-working equines at Sprout make a career of giving unconditionally to our clients. Sprout carefully selects horses that possess the temperament, size and gait patterns that promote independence, physical development and horsemanship from clients of all ages.
Honor Through Service
The roots of Sprout go back to 1944, when Richard Bacas contracted polio while vacationing with family at the Eastern Shore in Maryland. While polio left him paralyzed, Mr. Bacas was a leader and entrepreneur, and upon his death in 2005, his family chose to honor his memory by creating a facility that would serve those with similar needs.
In 2009 the family found a forgotten soybean farm in foreclosure in Loudoun County and saw potential. The farm was refurbished for horses and an accessible facility was carefully constructed with the sole purpose of including and empowering individuals with disabilities. The organization was named Sprout for it’s literal “grass-root” start, as a reminder to build from the ground up and to focus on GROWTH!
Over the years, Sprout has become farm more than a horse farm and a dream... it is a respite, a family, a calling, a beacon of hope and community for all.
