Sprout enrolls students before each new session. The enrollment process closes 2 weeks prior to the start of the session, and all paperwork is due to Sprout at a minimum of 1 week before the beginning of the session. A physician release/medical history form, emergency information, waiver and media release is required to be completed prior to riding at Sprout.
Therapeutic Riding Lessons at Sprout Focus On
- Riding Skills – Participants are instructed on (at minimum) 1 riding skill per lesson. Participants demonstrate progress toward the riding skill through measureable outcomes. Progress is documented at the end of each session and shared with parents at bi-annual conferences.
- Physical Goals – Participants work to increase physical strength, coordination and flexibility through planned exercises. Repetitions and endurance is noted at each session and progress is measured and recorded.
- Social/Emotional/Life Skills – Instructors determine goals with parents, caregivers and participants. Participants work toward goals during lessons, with progress measured and recorded.
Therapeutic Riding Lessons Include
Mounted Lessons – Riding lessons are designed to improve the physical, cognitive, psychological and social skills of riders. Objective-based lessons challenge riders to meet and achieve individual goals. Regardless of individual ability, horses motivate each rider to reach their personal potential.
Horsemanship Lessons – Ground-work lessons allow for personal growth of students by providing activities that encourage interaction with our horses. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities, and then discussing their thoughts, feelings and observations about the horse(s).
Sprout offers four sessions of lessons per year (fall, winter, spring and summer). Sessions range from 5-8 weeks in length and students ride on a weekly basis in a predetermined time block. Lessons may be private, semi-private or group, based on the needs of the rider (private lessons are 30 min in length, and semi-private/group lessons are 1 hour in length). Parents are responsible for ensuring that students attend lessons (1 lesson may be “made up” at the end of the session (for students with a pre-arranged absence). All cancellations must be made with a 12-hour notice so Sprout is able to alter equine and volunteer schedules appropriately.
